  • Event Date: 09.27.09
  • Event Time: 04:00pm
  • Location: Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA Between California and Millwood
  • Cause Leaders: Aung San Suu Kyi

What’s Going Down:
At exactly 4:00 P.M we will take over the streets of Abbot Kinney to raise awareness for Aung San Suu Kyi. Over 300 full sized Shepard Fairey posters, depicting international human rights activist and Burmese political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi, will be given out for FREE for you to hold.

At 4:00 p.m sharp, hundreds of individuals throughout the festival and freeze in place (for exactly 5 minutes), unfurl the poster, and gain much needed attention for Burma. To be noted- this is not a protest. We are effectively using this image of freedom to raise attention, awareness and action against the human rights abuses happening in Burma.

Grab a Poster:
Pick posters up during the week at Causecast HQ (969 Colorado Blvd, Santa Monica), or come by the Causecast booth BETWEEN 10am and 3:00pm on Sept 27th- on Abbot Kinney just between California and Millwood.

Why Burma? Why Aung San Suu Kyi?
Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winning activist and the democratically elected leader of Burma, has been under house arrest for 14 out of the past 19 years. Although she was supposed to be released this summer, the 64-year-old was convicted on Aug. 11 for breaking the terms of her house arrest when an American “intruder” stayed at her home. Now she is serving another 18 months of house arrest unjustly. If she is not freed, she cannot run for office and lead her people in next year’s election.

The violation of her basic rights are a reflection of the human rights atrocities committed every day by Burma’s military junta. She is the rightful leader of the country, having won in a landslide with 82% of the vote, but has been kept from establishing democracy for 19 years. It is our job to stand up and use our voice to help give her the freedom to lead. To find out more about Burma and Aung San Suu Kyi, visit Causecast.org/freedomtolead .

This was an awesome event! I had a great time informing people about Burma and I hope that more people are aware of the atrocities happening in Burma.
