Dear Kestrin;
I see you are interested in music and education. Please review our profile below. Please feel free to contact me at 310 453 2348 or sangel@adelphia.net.
About Us
The Drumming for Your Life Institute is dedicated to using the power of rhythm to help children and youth develop the emotional, academic, and social skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
Drumming for Your Life has been featured on CNN; BBC Radio; The Los Angeles Times; and NBC News “Stop the Violence”.
Drumming for Your Life’s Mission
The Institute's goal is to bring the benefits of drumming to schools, juvenile justice facilities, cancer, and addiction rehabilitation centers.
Our Programs - The Reading and Rhythm & Life Skills Drumming Programs
SCHOOLS
The Reading and Rhythm program (held during or after school) uses rhythm to increase fluency and accuracy. Rhythm is used to help students move through words. Students are inspired to read when they hear and feel the rhythm. A stronger connection between the reader, story, and teacher is created.
“Fluency rates increased for the students in the program from 52 to 68 percent as measured by Open Court unit scores. Teachers have also noticed a rise in the students’ motivation to continue to improve their reading as well as other curriculum areas.” - B. Coleman, Principal of Westminster Ave Elementary
JUVENILE JUSTICE
The Life Skills Drumming program uses rhythm to help youths cope with emotions and improve self-esteem. Teens learn to maintain control over anger and impulsive behavior in order to connect and communicate with others, and envision a more positive life.
“I came into this program ‘mad’ at the world. But now, life is so ‘easy’ and I’m thankful for this program.” -N.W. Incarcerated Youth.
Who We Serve
Too many children lack basic reading skills critical for success in school and in life, and lack the motivation or confidence to engage in and benefit from traditional reading instruction. Drumming for Your Life’s Reading and Rhythm Program has shown that incorporating rhythm-making and rhythm-listening into reading instruction can significantly improve the motivation and proficiency of even the most resistant readers. Some of the notable organizations we work with to help K-12 students are the Los Angeles County of Education; Los Angeles Unified School District; Department of Mental Health; Soledad Enrichment Action and Youth Policy Institute.
Leadership Profile
Steven Angel is the founder, creator, facilitator and trainer of Drumming for Your Life. In1998, Steven created the Life Skills Drumming program to help at-risk youth deal with impulsive behavior and learn self-empowerment. Following that success, Steven created the Rhythm of Learning in-classroom program, which uses rhythm and other techniques in all subjects to help students achieve higher grades and to improve their behavior. Since 2001, Steven has implemented the Reading and Rhythm program as an after-school and in-school program. Steven has trained facilitators who have worked with 40 schools through the Los Angeles County and Kings County in California. Steven has facilitated the Rhythm of Learning Professional Development workshops and has reached over 1,200 teachers over the last five years through corporate grants.
What Sets Us Apart?
Why music, rhythm and drumming? Drums were extremely powerful tools for generating healing and creating community in past civilizations. Rhythm can be found in every aspect of life.
We use rhythm as a tracking device to break through blockages students have with reading and with emotional issues they confront on a daily basis. We combine educational techniques, psychology, and physics. The programs we have created are based in building self confidence which inspires students to take new actions which creates positive results.
Dear Ms. Pantera,
My name is Baird Duschatko and I am the Creative Director of the 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, Bands For Lands. Our mission is to communicate the message and teach the practice of sustainability, conservation and social responsibility through co-creation between communities, the creative arts and inspirational leaders of the Green Revolution. The majority of funds raised at our events are allocated to local organizations aligned with our mission.
There are a growing number of humans who have awakened to the fact that in order to preserve our planet for generations to come, there must be profound change in our individual and community-based worldview. Advances in sustainable development are all innovative and presently accommodating (e.g. recycling, renewable energy, composting), but they are not the solution to the whole problem. These efforts are a good beginning, but in the entire scheme of things they are ineffective because of the global acceptance of an antiquated, dirty and ecologically harmful energy system. The global energy system has finally entered into the realm of change, but it is only the very beginning. We need to scrap the old system entirely and evolve into a new system, and that evolution comes from within the social and political structure of our local communities. Bands For Lands provides an innovative and viable way to gather local communities together to realize their inner potential not only as creative beings, but also as stewards of the Earth.
Bands For Lands feels the best way to inspire, awaken and empower is through the creative arts and direct involvement with local community organizations. Our vision is simple, but our journey is long and complex. We are in need of funds in the form of tax-deductible donations from individuals and businesses like you that believe that the current global system needs to change. Our yearly budget is $163,100, and we are seeking individual donations of $25-$1000. We have currently raised $10,000 from local venues, grants and personal loans, have a growing spring and summer schedule of events and appearances booked, and continue to align ourselves with leading edge captains of the Green Revolution. Your contribution will go directly into taking the evolution gear out of reverse and shifting it into forward.
By partnering ourselves with organizations and individuals such as you who are working towards a sustainable, conservation-oriented and socially responsible America, we are creating a network of conscious Americans. We are calling for all humanity to each realize their true potential, tap into their inner creativity, and create a planet that will thrive over infinite generations.
It would be an honor to have someone of your stature and influence support our cause and be an integral part of Bands For Lands’ mission. We will actively promote you as being a BFL supporter on all of our promotional materials and website, you will have full access to all of our monthly reports and upcoming projects, full VIP access to all of our events, opportunities to speak or perform at any of our events, and a permanent seat on our advisory committee.
If you would like to learn more about our organization, and receive our partner/sponsor package, please drop me a line at the address below.
Thanks very much for your time, and I look forward to your reply.
In our creativity, in our compassion, and in our community lies the solution.
Yours very truly,
Baird Duschatko
