A new study titled MapChange 2010 shows that major North American brands are still not hitting the consumer mark when it comes to sustainability.
The study incorporates both actual measurements on climate change action being undertaken by over 90 companies across North America, and perception measurements of these companies’ actions by consumers. Companies include category leaders such as Coca-Cola, Groupe Danone, Nike, Gap, P&G, L’Oreal, Microsoft and Amazon.com.
The actual scoring on climate change action was provided by Climate Counts as part of their annual climate change study of well-known consumer companies. The perception measurements, meanwhile, were provided by Angus Reid Public Opinion, and include over 2,000 American adults in a random sample.
The companies were grouped by sector, and the results illustrated in ‘perception / reality’ maps. In total, 10 sectors were mapped.
Across every sector, MapChange showed a disparity between actual sustainability act...Read More -

A Boston College survey of more than 300 North American companies in a variety of industries reveals that despite the economic crisis, businesses have forged ahead with community involvement efforts as part of a continued commitment to corporate citizenship.
Released today, “Staying the Course -- The 2009 Community Involvement Index” is a biennial survey conducted by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship that asks about companies’ community involvement programs, practices and management. Community involvement is the cornerstone of most companies’ commitment to corporate citizenship and the findings of this survey offer encouraging evidence that the foundation remains sound.
In the face of economic pressures of historic proportions, most companies held their ground in support of community involvement programs. While a significant percentage of companies cut their community involvement budgets, 62.1 percent maintained or increased budget levels. And though 37.8 pe...Read More -

The 40% Problem: Why Retailers and Brands are Struggling with Social Compliance in China
- Posted on 12.27.09
Many of the most transparent retailers and brands report that 40-50% of their factories are either in remediation or considered medium risks. Moreover, this has not changed much over the past three years. Why has this proven to be such a challenge?
The principal goal is to protect the brand from disclosure that its suppliers and factories may not be trading ethically. Protecting the brand is an immediate problem. Human rights in developing countries is an aspirational goal. Unfortunately, retailers and brands have put in place “comply or die” policies and a monitoring and enforcement program which seek to drive immediate adherence to aspirational goals. The notion that a factory, relatively immature in its development, from a completely different culture can at the snap of the fingers honestly comply is unrealistic.
While there has been progress under this model, we are at a point where its usefulness has hit a plateau. In fact, the model is probably contributing to a ...Read More -
