I Wish I Lived Somewhere Progressive ... Like IOWA! Have you seen that sign before?
Well if you have, I'm sure that you, like me, decided to go to a march for marriage equality on decision day, May 26th.
Obviously, it's been all over the news. The California Supreme Court decided to upheld the ruling of Prop 8. But they made the 18,000 marriages that occurred in the short time period when homosexuals were on the same playing field as heterosexuals legal.
Score one for the gays, right?
    Wrong.
Yes, that was great, but now all of those married couples are here, fighting for the rights of all the other couples still waiting for their chance to be allowed. Obviously, they're not stoked.
There are plans to march on Washington -that, sadly, are slowly falling through due to the date. There is the entire "We're coming back in 2010, you ready?" ordeal. I could not be more excited for this.
With the decision coming back in 2010 when we have gained that many more young folks who care about the cause -whether because they are gay or not is besides the point- that is just how many more people we will gain to flip the vote and get this fixed. PLUS, it is two more years of hardcore, intense grassroots efforts in counties most people thought were shoe-ins. Because 48-52, in my opinion is way too close of a call to say that it's fair.

I know, this whole issue faces such controversy between the supporters on both sides. I can handle the controversy. But for the sake of common courtesy, let's agree to disagree, okay?
I can only hope that at some point, something I say to you will suddenly ring true and you'll change your mind and rethink all that you've been told. And you can only hope for the same on your behalf for me. But I can be honest with you, I am a stubborn person, the odds of you changing my views on whether or not gays should be allowed to marry is about slim to none.

Moving on from that side note, now we have reached a point where we are getting into Obama's first summer as President. And when he was running for President he said he'd work on repealing the "don't ask don't tell" deal. And now here we are, patiently -or not so patiently- waiting for the action to take place. Where is the repeal?
I'm not sure, but I will keep waiting. Slowly but surely I believe it will be repealed.
Maybe with a few more nudges from progressive states like Iowa that actually allow gay marriage and Obama will pick up the hint.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the gay community during the 'summer of change.'
