No on 1 Campaign in Maine
- Posted on 08.14.09
Just today I got an e-mail from Equality California about helping fund the No on 1 Campaign.
What's the No on 1 Campaign?
In Maine it is currently legal for gays to marry. But that same force that fueled the 'Yes on 8' campaign is back to change that. This time the battle field is Maine.
Simply put, 'No on 1' is the same as 'No on 8.' All we've got this time is a different number in a different state.
Frank Schubert, who ran the 'Yes on 8' campaign, the National Organization for Marriage, producers of the “Gathering Storm” video, and Focus on the Family, are all behind the madness. This group of extremists has already raised more than $340,000, which is twice the amount raised by the 'No on 1' campaign.
The good news?
Equality California and Courage Campaign are both acting on this issue. These two companies don't see eye-to-eye on when to return Prop 8 to the ballot, but at least they have the decency to work towards assisting other states in crisis. Both companies believe that if the win doesn't happen in Maine, it will be that much harder for it to happen in California.
Courage Campaign wants to keep their momentum going after they had surpassed their goal of $100,000 for their fund to bring Prop 8 back in 2010. On their site it says "Before we can take our pivotal battle for marriage equality to the ballot in California in 2010, we have to win in Maine in 2009."
In the e-mail from Equality California, "A victory in Maine is essential for victory in California. We are all connected so we need to continue the national momentum toward marriage equality."
I'm proud of these two companies for being able to assist states in need.
On the other hand, I'm worried for Maine. The problem that arose for California's 'No on 8' campaign was the fact that it was underfunded, and no one really knew the lies until after the ruling had already passed. Currently, Maine is in the same position of the 'No on 1' campaign being underfunded. If the people on the opposing side to the issue always have the upper hand in funding, I don't know how to keep hope alive for gay marriage in any state.
