Kelly Picks a Fight: Rut Dwellers and Naysayers A friend of mine recently said that one of the things she liked most about me was that, no matter what, I keep moving forward. I replied that there's not much point in going any other way, if'n your goal is progress. Ruts aren't good for cars, so why would they be good for people?

As a society, we've been stuck in one of those ruts for the past eight years, if not for the past 2000 or so. But the tow truck has arrived and we're getting hauled out of the ditch. The road ahead is long and winding, but if we keep moving forward, we'll eventually reach our destination. Yes. We. Can. Ain't no naysayers gonna keep us down!

Now, even though we have a new leader in Barack Obama who, I believe, can show us the way, we still have to do our part. Every day we are faced with choices in our lives, and every day we must make an effort to do what's right. The right choice, the journey, often demands what might seem like sacrifice on our part. Perhaps we can't buy something we really want due to the economic crisis; or maybe we have to pay a little extra for the Earth-friendly brand. But is it really a sacrifice to not participate in a culture of consumerism or to support the planet?

Whatever it is, in each moment of each day, challenge yourself to live for the greater good rather than just to appease your own ego. Make conscious choices in your thoughts, speech and actions. Less is very often more when it comes to matters such as these. The collective energy generated by selflessness, conservation and humility has an absolute impact. It's almost like prayer by action... sort of. And it feels great to feed and be fed by a mojo of generosity and kindness.

The new year is the perfect time to contemplate the ruts and nays in your life, in your community, in your world and to decide on a different course. Shake up your daily routine so that you don't get stuck in a rut or say nay when you should move forward with a loud, proud “Yes we can.” (Or, if you're so inclined, “Si se puede.”)
