Why I Participate

Did you know that there are more homeless people right now than at any other time in America or that more than 1.3 million of them are children? 3 out of ever 10 homeless adults admit to a history in foster care and with 25,000 youth aging out of foster care each year, the next wave of homeless in America will surely comprise of orphans who were never adopted. If you care about foster care, adoption, homelessness, children, families or the future of our country, you should participate! Event Description: More than 25 Pulitzer-prize winners along with some of the most recognized names in photography have come together to put a "face" on homelessness while asking you, the public, to put a "face" on activism by doing 1 thing to help them. We believe that if everyone did 1 thing on 1 day to help 1 cause, great change would come. The issues surrounding homeless are gigantic. The answers overwhelming. But what if every did 1 thing to help? JOIN US in doing 1 thing on the day Americans spend more than 14 billion dollars telling each other how much they care, do 1thing to help someone less fortunate than yourselves.

About Me

Najlah Feanny Hicks and Pim Van Hemmen co-founded The Heart Gallery of New Jersey, a unique not-for-profit corporation dedicated to raising awareness about foster children available for adoption. Through the volunteer efforts of some of the country's most prestigious photographers, portraits are taken that help capture the individuality and spirit of each foster child who is eligible to be adopted. These photographs are then shared via the web and through gallery exhibits in the hope that potential families will be moved to inquire about adoption. Four years later, more than 150 New Jersey orphans have been adopted. In 2008 the created Do 1 Thing, a nationwide effort to rise awareness and encourage action for homeless teenagers.
