My First Blog EVER: Some Musings on Veggie Meat
- Posted on 06.10.09
In the internet age, who on earth hasn't written a blog post?
Apparently, I'm one such loser. But I'm excited to remedy this obvious inadequacy in my life and jump right in! I hope by summer's end, to be a blogger extraordinaire.
Originally I was stumped for a topic, but I realized there’s no such thing for a blog. You can write whatever you want to, that’s the point! So here's what was on my mind...
Veggie Meat: Uncharted Waters
When I was a new vegetarian, I used to be TERRIFIED of meat substitutes. I was stressed out if it tasted even remotely meat like – wondering if someone had accidentally given me the real deal. But now that I’ve had a few years to ease into my meat-free world, I’m slowly adding delicious meat substitutes to my cooking repertoire. Here are some of my favorites:
Soy hot dogs! The best thing about these is you can buy them at almost any supermarket. The Lightlife Smart dogs brand is great. Host a BBQ and serve these up as an amazing summer treat. If you’ve got some carnivorous friends coming over, keep your mouth shut and see if they can tell the difference! My favorite way to enjoy these is wrapped up in a wheat bun with some Dijon mustard and a little relish. Or try them sliced up in a batch of guilty-pleasure mac-n-cheese.
Trader Joes offers a fine Soy Chorizo, which I really recommend in all its spicy goodness. Cook it up with some black beans and then veggie tacos are a cinch! Whole wheat tortillas, fresh avocado, crumbled Mexican cheese complete the meal. The beauty of this is you can add in any other veggies you’ve got hanging around your kitchen.
On the same track as the chorizo, is Whole Food’s Field Roast sausage. I love the Mexican chipotle flavor, but be warned it’s spicy! I sliced it up with some onions and bell peppers for a breakfast dish. The perfect compliment to scrambled eggs on a lazy Sunday morning.
Recently, I really went out on a limb and gave vegetarian orange chicken a try for the first time. I was pretty scared, took a tiny bit and was almost afraid to chew. But as my taste buds were quick to inform me, it was actually delightful. Several places around LA serve this dish, just check the menu!
Not only am I excited to feed myself these veggie treats but I also make it my goal to convince the meat-eaters I love to have a few meat-free meals each week.Related causes: Animals

Ohhh...unfortunately I don't know about what the best veggie digs are in SD. But I'm sure some kind of restaurant guide book (or online guide) can help. They usually have some fun little symbol (like a leaf...how clever) by the veggie places, so you can find them easily. Good luck veggin' out!!
You seem to know where all the good veggie places are in LA, any recommendations regarding that other SoCal city, San Diego?
I'll have to treat you and the other veggie eaters to Bulan Thai - a delicious vegan thai restaurant in LA. SO SO SO good!
