Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's health could deteriorate if imprisoned in Insein It is possible, unfortunately, that if Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is detained in Rangoon's notorious Insein Prison, her health could deteriorate, as we all know that recently she suffered from low-blood pressure and dehydration, and needed to have an intravenous drip.

I read a book by Justin Wintle, "Perfect Hostage: Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma and the Generals", which is about Burma's ancient and modern histories, and also about Suu Kyi herself.

In one of its chapters, Wintle wrote about the events that occurred after Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was released from 6 years of house arrest in 1995 (July 20, 1989 - July 1995). In the said chapter, I learned that one of Daw Suu's friends, Leo Nicholls, who was also an acquaintance of her mother, Daw Khin Kyi, was arrested by the Tatmadaw (Burmese Army) after letting the Nobel laureate send some papers for her book, "Letters from Burma" to Japan, using his fax machine. Nicholls was sentenced to three years in prison, and probably was detained in Insein.

After just a mere two months under detention, he was dead.
Because of the horrible conditions in Insein, he died, sparking condemnation overseas.

As Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, her helpers, and the American national John Yettaw (the one who swam to Suu Kyi's home uninvited) were sent to court this morning, nobody is still sure what was the "verdict", but most people expect it to be "guilty".

If the world's most famous political prisoner today will spend the next 5 years in Insein, I just hope that she won't end like her dear friend, poor old Mr. Nicholls.
