So You Think Cage Free Eggs are Animal Friendly?
- Posted on 03.10.09
I used to buy organic cage-free eggs with pride. I imagined happy chickens clucking around a yard, with shining feathers, laying eggs in warm nests. Then I saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ0YWK3Fwgc.
It stands to reason that any operation big enough to provide mass-produced eggs for sale in large national chains would not exactly be combing their hens' feathers. Sure, these birds are not stuck in cages - but that seems to be about the only difference. And, like industrially milked cows, after this miserable life they get to be slaughtered in our wonderful factory farms. This is what we call a humane solution.
Basically if you want the kind of idealistic scenario described in the first paragraph you'd have to go to a recreational farm that raises chickens as pets.
