All I had to do was count to 21. Simple yeah? I suppose it is. But under pressure and the watchful eyes of the other players, adding up numbers quickly is not my strong trait. Leading up to the day that I was asked to volunteer as a blackjack dealer at a charity event, I joked that my table will be the popular table because I'll give up on my math and decide that everybody wins every hand. Did I mention that I've never dealt blackjack before, nor have I played blackjack enough to know all the rules? (What the hell is a "split" and a "double down"?)

This was for a Casino Night benefit for the JMC Domestic Violence Prevention Program, a charity focusing on helping women and children in Honduras who have been victims of domestic violence. Almost a year ago I first heard about the charity when they began raising money to build a safe house in Honduras. Last week a Casino Night was held at my halau (hula school). Roulette, craps, and blackjack tables filled the dance studio.

The other day I saw a big sign outside of Children's Hospital announcing that this month is National Nutrition Month. As someone who pays very close attention to how healthy my meals are I'm excited to share a little bit about my world...the world of Raw Veganism!

I know, it sounds scary. In fact, there are a few people here at the Causecast office (cough::ED::cough) who were afraid to taste the raw pecan pie I made with a brazil nut crust and date filling (and pecans, duh!). What's so scary about uncooked food?

For breakfast I usually eat a banana with raw almond butter, raw cacao nibs, goji berries, raw agave, and blueberries with a glass of unpasteurized orange juice. There have been times that I've brought a whole coconut to work, sip on the water and scoop the meat right out of the shell. Co-workers were curious, some who have never even seen a real coconut.

It surprises me that the culture around food has been so processed and so refined that we are now removed from t...Read More

RAW-iversary and Thanksgiving This year was my first Thanksgiving as a full on raw vegan! As the only raw foodist in my family, I made whipped "potatoes", mushroom gravy, lemon-garlic bisque, and cranberry relish. All raw vegan recipes. The picture representing this blog is the raw pecan pie that I made for dessert. My dad LOVES pecan pie! It’s his favorite. The pie turned out so good that he didn’t even notice that it was raw. My sister’s boyfriend enjoys making baked goods and treats so he can be picky when it comes to food. He tasted my raw pecan pie and he said it was “damn delicious.” That’s right, DAMN DELICIOUS!

Last year was a much different experience when I took a few bites of turkey and I was ready for a nap. Right before Thanksgiving 2007, I started on the raw journey and noticing how emotional states relate to what I eat. As a former victim of the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.), guilt and negative self-talk would result after eating a meal. This of course transfers into the rest of my life. I wa...Read More

  • My dirty makeup box

Gross! I haven't cleaned out my makeup box in months...maybe longer. And it wasn't me who cleaned it last. It was my 7 year old niece who volunteered to clean it because it was getting dirty. She even meticulously lined up the brushes so neatly. But this time she wasn't here to do the dirty work for me. So with pre-moistened wipes in hand I attended to wiping off the eye-shadow dust on every surface and in every crevice where it has settled and collected. Amazing how much excess makeup is wasted by a little swirl-swirl-swirl...tap-tap-tap...and blow (that's my lame attempt at typing the actions of the eye shadow brushes.) Not to mention the accumulated eye liner and lip liner residue on my pencil sharpener. And mascara caked on the tiny comb that separates my eyelashes. Luckily I just bought a new eyelash curler so nothing to clean there.

What I thought would be a 5 minute task ended being a 30 minute moment of enlightenment. Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating by using words like "enlig...Read More

DSC06773_2.jpg Last night, BEST CONCERT EVER!!!

Ok, so I realize that this is the second blog I am writing about nkotb. I can assure you, my taste in music has changed since I was 10 years old. In fact, the band I was previously obsessed with (at 9 years old) was Bon Jovi and my post-nkotb obsession was 311 (for a full record-breaking 10 years).

But last night, I couldn't help it. Somehow they still tug on my heart strings! (I heart Joey!) Amused by cheesy boy band choreography, my friends and I laughed and danced along to all the old hits. Thousands of screaming fans, decked out in classic nkotb paraphernalia (remember those giant buttons?), everybody singing along, horribly and out of tune, to "I'll Be Loving You Forever", the fans were just as entertaining as the New Kids.

Mid-concert, a song was dedicated to friends and family that they have lost, one being Danny Wood's mother who had passed away from breast cancer. In remembrance of her and others who has suffered from breast cancer,...Read More
