National Nutrition Month
- Posted on 03.13.09
The other day I saw a big sign outside of Children's Hospital announcing that this month is National Nutrition Month. As someone who pays very close attention to how healthy my meals are I'm excited to share a little bit about my world...the world of Raw Veganism!
I know, it sounds scary. In fact, there are a few people here at the Causecast office (cough::ED::cough) who were afraid to taste the raw pecan pie I made with a brazil nut crust and date filling (and pecans, duh!). What's so scary about uncooked food?
For breakfast I usually eat a banana with raw almond butter, raw cacao nibs, goji berries, raw agave, and blueberries with a glass of unpasteurized orange juice. There have been times that I've brought a whole coconut to work, sip on the water and scoop the meat right out of the shell. Co-workers were curious, some who have never even seen a real coconut.
It surprises me that the culture around food has been so processed and so refined that we are now removed from the natural state of foods. Or maybe my diet is so totally hippie that I believe that the truest state of food provides us with what our bodies require.
In the 15 months that I've been a raw vegan, I've been the healthiest I've ever felt, stress is managed better, and I have more energy throughout the day. I've introduced raw vegan dishes to my family, friends, hula sisters, and co-workers who were daring enough to taste them. BTW, reluctant Ed had one bite of that raw pecan pie and liked it.
Raw veganism isn't scary, it's just food at it's most natural state. And it's all kinds of yummy deliciousness. It's National Nutrition Month, eat something nutrient rich. I'm just sayin'...
