I suck at math
- Posted on 04.03.09
All I had to do was count to 21. Simple yeah? I suppose it is. But under pressure and the watchful eyes of the other players, adding up numbers quickly is not my strong trait. Leading up to the day that I was asked to volunteer as a blackjack dealer at a charity event, I joked that my table will be the popular table because I'll give up on my math and decide that everybody wins every hand. Did I mention that I've never dealt blackjack before, nor have I played blackjack enough to know all the rules? (What the hell is a "split" and a "double down"?)
This was for a Casino Night benefit for the JMC Domestic Violence Prevention Program, a charity focusing on helping women and children in Honduras who have been victims of domestic violence. Almost a year ago I first heard about the charity when they began raising money to build a safe house in Honduras. Last week a Casino Night was held at my halau (hula school). Roulette, craps, and blackjack tables filled the dance studio.
I had a full table of players most of the night. At times I had to pause the game to add up cards but the players were nice to me (most of the time...the players couldn't beat me!). JMCDVPP raised a lot of money for a good cause and everybody had a good time. And I left that night with a new skill. Who wants to challenge me to a game of blackjack?
