In Response to the Dogmen
- Posted on 04.18.09
I've been reading the rules and defense of "true dogmen."

There are a few major points they make that I'd like to address.
1. It is in these dogs' nature to fight, so dogmen do the breed a service by honing this trait and producing dogs that have "game" (i.e. tenacity, courage, strength, focus). Uneducated street thugs have given this "noble sport" a bad name by their inhumane and ignorant practices.
Do they realize that the minute they put their hands on the dogs they are eliminating any "natural" traits? What may initially have been a natural defense/survival mechanism for an animal becomes in the hands of these men, a cultivated trait that for dogmen by definition enhances dog-on-dog aggression. Whether you are an old-timer respectful of age-old dogmen traditions or a ghetto street kid fighting a dog you found in an alley, you share one thing: Your desire to watch two animals harm one another.
2. Human beings are hypocrites because they appreciate boxing matches but complain that dogfighting is cruel.
First of all I suspect most of the anti-dogfighting advocates are not big fans of boxing. But the most simple and obvious response to this is that boxing involves grown men participating of their own free will, for their own financial gain. A dog that has been bred, pruned and trained for the fighting pit has never had an opportunity to be anything else.
3. Generic lovers of so-called pit bulls are crucifying the dogmen for creating the very breed they love so much.
I did not love my pit bull because he was a muscle-bound, tenacious, courageous dog-aggressive performance machine. If that was what I wanted I would have purchased a tiger or bought a Porsche or something equally ridiculous. I loved him because he was a living creature that returned my love, shared in my life and brought joy to everyone around him.
For people who have a sublimated need to express their personal inadequacies by external manipulation and demonstrations of prowess through their pit bulls I would recommend outlets that do not necessitate aggravated assault against another living creature. Great examples would be agility trials (look at Wallace the Disc Champion), weight-pulling contests, spring-pole jumping and tree climbing.
4. "True" dog matches are dignified, respectable events involving an exclusive circle of admirable men who have great respect for the breed.
I don't care if Martin Luther King was a closet Dogman; that will not change the fact that no matter how much intellectual, vintage testosterone you try to inject into this activity what it comes down to is very simple: You get your jollies by watching small animals biting each other.
Furthermore, since when does tradition or past history equal validity? Human beings have been torturing, raping and killing one another since the dawn of time. Tigers, lions, bears, all manner of wild animals will fight and kill for survival. These animals do not place themselves in rings and hurt each other whilst others gather 'round exchanging bits of deer meat and commenting about what rippling muscles Tiger Number One has, or admiring how Tiger Number Two just won't quit until he's dead.
Apart from personal experience, I think the surviving Vick dogs http://vickdogsblog.blogspot.com/ have most proven to me that the pit bull is not and should not be a killing machine. You Dogmen may argue that Vick is a punk and he got some lame fake pits with bad bloodlines, not true Game Dogs. First of all Michael Vick had a lot of money and access to quite a wide circle of people so I doubt he was given dogs that were bred in Sally Mae Sue's trailer in East Bumblewatt. Additionally, if the definition of a Game Dog is its razor-sharp desire to go at another dog until death, how can you call it dignified?
There is dignity in laying down one's life for freedom, justice and liberty. There is dignity in fighting to the death to protect those who cannot defend themselves. But there is no dignity in encouraging two animals to tear each other to shreds for the viewing pleasure of these so-called sportsmen for whom they lay down their lives.
I think it's time that Dogmen stop rationalizing their bloodlust and accept that the human race is evolving without them, before they find themselves face to face with some "clueless liberal peace-loving p*****s" who would gladly show them what courage, tenacity and strength applied to a truly honorable cause, can mean.
