17 Year Old Raises $40,000 for Jewish World Watch
Shelby Layne first learned about the Jewish World Watch through her father after he came back from a American-Jewish Committee meeting. JWW was there to talk about Darfurian women who were living at the Iridimi refugee camp. These women had to risk being killed and raped if they left the camp to find wood in order to cook food for their families. JWW was trying to raise money for their Solar Cooker Project, which for just $30 provided two stoves for these women so they wouldn’t have to risk their lives in order to provide hot food for their families. “I felt fortunate. I knew the value of my own family,” said 17-year-old Shelby. When thinking about how she could get involved, she asked herself, “What skills do I have?” With that thought she decided to start making jewelry and selling it to raise money for the JWW. To date Shelby has raised an amazing $40,000 for the Solar Cooker Project.
