Why Are Actors Liberal?
When people see an actor voicing a political opinion, most assume it’s going to be liberal. Why is this? Matthew Modine has an opinion. “Actors are often accused of being liberals but it’s actually one of the job descriptions of `I’m going to stand in another human being’s shoes.’ So what is that experience like if I’m going to portray that person truthfully?” he said. “The more that you have an opportunity to be an actor, the more that you have an opportunity to travel and learn about life, the more that you understand that liberal means being a humanitarian. The word, especially in our country, has been pushed into a political context where it has no place being in.”
Modine has also started what he hopes will become a worldwide tradition. His plan is to get the whole world to ride their bikes to work or school one day out of the year. This year Modine is focusing on conducting this event in New York City. “I’ll be up there on my unicycle,” he joked. “Bicycling is obviously something that you can do that will have an immediate positive impact on the environment. I live in New York City, the average person commutes five to 10 miles and that’s something that you can do faster on a bicycle than you can on public transportation or in a car.” “It’s really important this year to have a successful launch in New York to help make it viable and then next year, the goal is to create a global bicycle day so we have one year to try and pull it all together,” he said.
