European Parliment Decide To Cut Back On Renewable Energy

European politicians have announced that they are planning on scaling back their plans to cut the increase of biofuels. The plan now is for 5% of transportation fuel to be from renewable sources and at least 1/5 to come from new alternatives that don’t compete with food production. By 2020 they want the percentage up to 10 and 40% of that should be from “second-generation” renewables. “We should be supporting the original target,” said Simo Honkanen, vice president at the renewable fuels division of Neste Oil, a Finnish company that sells biodiesel produced from palm oil, rapeseed and animal fat. “It’s important for the European biodiesel industry as a whole to have stability over one or two decades so that the industry can grow,” Mr. Honkanen said. “The vote by the European Parliament recognizes the serious problems associated with the large-scale use of biofuels,” said Adrian Bebb, the agrofuels campaign coordinator for Friends of the Earth Europe.
