India: To Industrialize Or Not To Industrialize?

Many in India are trying to change from an agricultural culture to an industrial powerhouse, but some are not so keen on this concept. Tata, one of the most powerful Indian companies, was almost ready to roll out an extremely cheap car from a factory that was built where potato and rice fields used to be. This was quickly halted by massive protests from peasants that used to farm on these lands. The main issue with this change is many of the peasants feel as if they are only qualified to work on farms and not in complicated factories. “If the price is right, people will sacrifice the emotional attachment, but if you no longer have the guarantee of living off the land, then what do you do?” asked Subir Gokarn, chief economist for Standard and Poor’s in India. “The people who are being displaced are not the people who see themselves as benefiting immediately from the employment opportunities.” However not everyone agrees with this. We are farmers,” said Tayab Ali Mandal, 52, of Joymolla village. “We know only farm work; we don’t know any paper-pencil work.” So far this raging dispute has halted many massive projects that have been trying to industrialize India.
Do you think India should try to become more industrialized or stick to their agricultural history?
