Howarth Bouis discusses breeding nutrient-rich plants to help alleviate worldwide malnutrition

Plenty Magazine interviewed the director of HarvestPlus, Howarth Bouis, to understand how malnutrition can be cured with better plants.
The number one problem in developing countries, Bouis notes, is that people are eating large quantities of food staples, but are failing to receive adequate vitamin and mineral intakes.
By a method known as biofortification, Bouis plans to “get the plants to do the work of fortifying themselves. So if you’re putting more iron and zinc in the seed, it’s breeding varieties that translocate the minerals from the soils through the plants and into the seeds.”
Bouis is targeting South Asia (India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan), and Africa for biofortification.
Do you think genetically-modified plants are the answer to global malnutrition?
