Bill Comes Close to Ending Slaughter Of Horses For Food

Most Americans don’t know that each year many horses are slaughtered for human consumption overseas. The bill known as the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008 will outlaw this act. ”H.R. 6598 will take American horses off the menu for good,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “Horses are an American icon who deserve better than to be shipped hundreds of miles in unbearable conditions to slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada where they will be cruelly slaughtered for human consumption.”
One of the discoveries that led to this bill was when the HSUS found out that thousands of horses were being stabbed with short knives which left the horses paralyzed and waiting to have their throats slit.
Were you aware that such cruel acts toward horses were happening?
