Nebraska Parents Abandon Their Grown Children Through Loophole Meant For Babies

Nebraska politicians created a law that they thought would help prevent ‘dumpster babies.’ The law states that legally a parent can come to a hospital and abandon their child. What they didn’t expect was that parents of teenagers would start leaving their children. Within 3 weeks, two 14 year-olds, two 11 year-olds and a 15 year-old boy were left at a hospital. That’s nothing compared to one father who gave up 9 of his 10 children, ages 1 to 17 saying that after his wife died he couldn’t cope with raising them. Parents are using this new law to get rid of their troubled children. “In Nebraska, as in a lot of states, we don’t have sufficient funding to provide a really strong mental health system for kids,” said Judy Kay, chief operating officer for the Child Saving Institute in Omaha. “But we do have resources that many parents are not aware of or are not using.”
Now, it’s one thing to take advantage of a loophole that doesn’t hurt anyone, but these are human lives. There’s no way that couldn’t affect the children’s mental health beyond repair. Hopefully Nebraska will step in so this doesn’t continue happening.
Do you think there’s ever an excuse to abandon a child?
