1 in 5 People In Japan Seriously Consider Suicide

In Japan the government released the results of a survey which state that one in 5 people in Japan had seriously considered suicide. Of all the nations in the industrialized world Japan has the highest suicide rate. With the downturn of the Japanese financial market the government expects this number to grow. Many people who are going to attempt suicide go to the Tojimbo Cliffs and jump into the Sea of Japan. Because of this a retired policeman named Yukio Shige patrols the area. When he thinks someone is going to kill themselves he goes over and has conversation with them. “For a lot of them it’s a cry for help,” he says. “They are really hoping someone will stop them before they take their own lives.” “I say to them ‘You must be in a lot of pain, tell me what happened’.” To date he’s saved around 150 people.
It’s really sad that honor is driving people to suicide. The market might be doing really bad now but it will bounce back at some point. It is nice to see that there’s people like Yukio helping people out.
