Usually, when a new computer comes out, all that matters is the speed and the cost. So what if the cost was also related to how environmentally safe the product was? Apple took a huge step today by unveiling new laptops that are not only cutting edge, but are some of the most environmentally conscious computers available today. The first step taken was the manufacturing process, which enabled these computers to be produced using recyclable material; in this case, aluminum with a glass screen. Next, they used mercury-free displays and arsenic-free display glass to cut down on these deadly chemicals. Adding to the process with printed circuit boards, electrical components, mechanical parts, and internal cables are BFR-free and PVC-free.

As if these efforts weren’t enough, they’ve invented a process that saves over 50% of the materials needed. When the computers are idle, they use 18 watts, which is less than that of a common light bulb. This was done by using energy efficient LED display. The final step taken was to cut down on the packaging by up to 41%. Not only is this creating less trash, but making the packages smaller and lighter; helping lessen the carbon footprint of the entire life of the devices. Because of the steps taken in the creation of these new releases, MacBook Pro and MacBook were awarded EPEAT Gold.

It’s great to see a company who was until recently considered to be far from environmentally sound, alter their tune and come out with some of the most environmentally friendly devices to date.

Does this type of direction from companies make you more interested in buying their product?

But how recyclable does this make the mac when it's exchange for the next generation?

Yes it does, I just thought about buying one :) But then I realized, I already have a notebook and another one wouldn't be environmentally sound..

This is such a step in the right direction. I think incorporating environmental costs into the price of products will be one of the fastest ways to bring about more sustainable practices and purchasing.
