"Yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid" Says Denis Leary
200px-Denis_Leary_2008.jpg

What causes autism in children? Is it vaccines? Is it hereditary? As of right now, it’s not clear. But “comedian” Denis Leary has an opinion.

In his new book, Leary writes, “There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can’t compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don’t give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you — yer kid is NOT autistic. He’s just stupid. Or lazy. Or both.”

The Autism Society of America doesn’t seem to think this is very funny. “For Mr. Leary to suggest that families or doctors conspire to falsely diagnose autism is ridiculous. . . . [His] remarks reflect the same misconceptions of autism being caused by bad or unemotional parenting that were held over 50 years ago.”

Jenny McCarthy, one of Causecast’s leaders, was singled out in this attack. When asked what chapter out of his book is his favorite he said the chapter on autism was and he hoped that activist Jenny McCarthy would picket his book tour. “That would be really good for me,” Leary said, “It will help sell more books.”

If you would like to know what Jenny McCarthy or Generation Rescue stands for, please check out their Causecast pages.

It’s not that shocking that Leary would pull a publicity stunt like this. He’s on the brink of fading into obscurity and is probably looking for a ratings boots on his basic cable show. Do comments like this change you opinion of Leary?

What a pathetic, and simply ignorant thing to say. God bless the families dealing with this and God bless the children.I will never understand how stupid or low some grown people choose to act.

I was upset when I heard that he had said this. Having a child with Autism, it's upsetting to hear. I have trouble watching Ice Age because what I think of him now. My child lazy and stupid? Well, your ignorant, Denis Leary and that's worse than being lazy or stupid, in my opinion.
