How to Prepare for a Wildfire

Here are some easy tips from CBC News to fireproof your home in order to cut the risk of loss in case of a fire.

Roof
Your roof should be made of fire-resistant materials, such as metal, clay or asphalt shingles. As well, it should be clear of branches or vegetation that could catch fire from airborne sparks and embers. Be sure to keep gutters free of leaves and branches as well.

Yard
Remove trees that are more combustible, such as pine and spruce. Make sure the foliage of trees are at least 3-6 yards away from another tree, to limit the spread of flames.

Windows
Install double-pane glass, thermal glass, or tempered glass to help keep the flames out. Single-pane glass provides little to no protection.

FEMA also gives these tips:
Install spark arrestors in chimneys and stovepipes. Chimneys create a hazard when embers escape through the top. To prevent this, install spark arrestors on all chimneys, stovepipes and vents for fuel-burning heaters. Use spark arrestors made of 12-gauge welded or woven wire mesh screen with openings 1/2 inch across. Ask your fire department for exact specifications. If you’re building a chimney, use non-combustible materials and make sure the top of the chimney is at least two feet higher than any obstruction within 10 feet of the chimney. Keep the chimney clean.

Use fire resistant siding
Use fire resistant materials in the siding of your home, such as stucco, metal, brick, cement shingles, concrete and rock. You can treat wood siding with UL-approved fire retardant chemicals, but the treatment and protection are not permanent.

If you're planning on surrounding your property with trees or shrubs, opt for plants slow to burn like Eucalyptus.
