Remembering Rita: Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 20 is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which annually honors the memory of those murdered because of transgender prejudice. Each year, the Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed in late November in memory of the 1998 murder of Rita Hester. Rita was a well-known member of the transgender community in Boston, where she worked locally on education and transgender issues. On Saturday, November 28, Rita was stabbed to death in her apartment. Ten years later, Rita’s murderer(s) have not been found.
In 1999, one year after Rita’s murder, advocate and writer Gwendolyn Ann Smith coordinated a vigil in memory of Rita. The vigil commemorated Rita, as well as all transgender people lost to violence and hatred. In addition to the vigil, Gwendolyn launched the Web site, Remembering Our Dead, to recognize those whose lives have been lost to transgender violence.
