Longtime supporters of our servicemen and women, both Nappy Roots and Washington Projects have made multiple treks to the Persian Gulf, embarked on numerous USO tours and performed before hundreds of U.S. troops. Among the first group of entertainers to travel into Iraq, the Nappy Roots participated in the USO’s 2003 “Project Salute Tour.” Following their lead, the Washington Projects journeyed to the region and participated in the 2005 and 2006 “Hope and Freedom USO Tour” led by Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth Preston.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve been out on tour with the USO,” said Fish Scales of Nappy Roots. “And we can’t wait to get back out there and give our nation’s troops a show they’ll never forget. After all, it is about them – they are the reason we can do what we do everyday.”

Best known for such hits as “Awnaw,” “Round Da Globe” and “Po Folks,” Nappy Roots originated in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1995. Since their arrival onto the music scene, they have released four studio albums, won a slue of award nominations and worked along such hitmakers as Anthony Hamilton and Greg Nice. Ranked the number one selling hip-hop group in 2002, their latest album “Humdinger” landed at #7 on the Billboard Rap Charts.

Performing under the stage name Washington Projects, Jekob and Rachel Washington have broken down boundaries with their unique blend of hip-hop, R&B and old school funk. Former members of SoulJahz, the neo soul group that took the world by storm in the early 2000s, they have performed alongside No Doubt, Nelly, Counting Crows and Erykah Badu. In 2007, Washington Projects released their debut album “Commanders of the Resistance.”

In times of peace and war, the USO consistently delivers its special brand of entertainment and comfort to service men and women stationed around the world. USO tours are essential to fulfilling the USO’s mission of boosting troop morale. In 2007, the USO produced 74 tours and staged 453 special entertainment events, to include music and comedy concerts, autograph signings, hospital visits and advance movie screenings.
