The USO has raised more than $40,000 for the 33rd Annual Marine Corps Marathon. The 35-member Team USO will run through parts of DC and Virginia on Oct. 26, marking the first-ever USO/Marine Corps Marathon partnership. Each Team USO member raised $1,000 or more.

“Being a part of the Marine Corps Marathon will be a wonderful experience,” said Sloan Gibson, USO president. “Through this partnership and the funds raised by Team USO, we are able to further our mission of providing vital support to service members and their families in the form of USO centers, entertainment and other morale boosting programs and services.”

Nicknamed “The People’s Marathon” because of it’s simple course and zero prize money, the marathon is the largest in the DC area, the 4th largest in the United States and the 7th largest in the world. The 26.2-mile run will start at the Memorial Bridge and end at the Iwo Jima Memorial, and is expected to have more than 30,000 participants. The USO will also sponsor tents at the marathon’s 3-day Health and Fitness Expo and in Charity Village during the run.

For more than 67 years, the USO has been the military’s home away from home, providing morale, welfare and recreation-type programs and services to troops and their families worldwide. As a private, non-profit organization, the USO relies on the generosity of the American public to support its vital work. USO programs include USO Operation Phone Home®, Operation USO Care Package, United Through Reading® Military Program, the Mobile USO, USO2Go, Operation Enduring Care, USO CarePages and Gifts from the Homefront.
