Urge President Obama to Appoint New Consumer Protection Director

As of February 10, it is illegal to manufacture, import or sell toys and childcare articles made with lead, a potent neurotoxin, and phthalates, plastic-softening chemicals linked to breast cancer, infertility and other health problems. It’s a victory we worked hard for. But we have urgent work to do to make sure the law is implemented effectively so that kids are protected.
The current Bush-appointed leadership of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the agency charged with implementation, is creating a climate of confusion and contributing to efforts to undermine the law. In the lead-up to today, the CPSC has managed to confuse just about everybody about how the law will be implemented, including thrift stores, retailers, handcrafted toymakers, the apparel industry—even libraries. Still other factions who actively opposed the bill are now calling for its repeal, and the CPSC is not showing the leadership needed to defend the law.
The CPSC has created a mess, and new leadership is needed to clean it up—fast.
That’s why we’re calling on President Obama to immediately appoint new leadership at the CPSC, leadership that is capable of immediately and rigorously implementing the law as Congress intended.
Urge President Obama to appoint a new CPSC director who will implement the law as intended to protect kids’ health and provide common-sense interpretations of the law to assist small businesses and retailers.
Let’s demand the leadership needed to protect our nation’s most precious resource—our children—from toxic toys.
Ask President Obama for a new consumer protection director.
