March 22 is World Water Day

Today is the 17th annual World Water Day, an observance established by the United Nations in 1993. On this day, activists hope to raise awareness of the water issue and, more importantly, raise money to support digging wells and bring clean water resources to populations worldwide.
The theme of the 2009 World Water Day is transboundary water, recognizing the 263 lakes and river basins that cross international territories and connect nations. Reference this issue from the official UN Water site by sending a World Water Day e-card.
One thing all of us can do immediately is save water in our daily lives. There are things we all know about already, like only doing laundry with a full load and taking shorter showers, but did you know that even a small drip from a household pipe can waste up to 50 gallons of water a day? Making sure to use household water efficiently is a simple and necessary challenge for all of us.
Brian Cooper from A Glimmer of Hope has pledged to donate a penny to charity: water for every view of the organization’s World Water Day video. He’s also looking for magnanimous leaders to match his donation, if you’re game.
From the UN’s World Water Day site: “We need to continue to nurture the opportunities for co-operation that transboundary water management can provide. We share the responsibility for managing the world’s transboundary waters for current and future generations.”
