Hugh Jackman "Tweets" For Two Causes

by AARON HORWITZ, Contributing Writer
Wow, looks like this crazy Twitter gadget really can be used for great things. Last week, Ashton Kutcher donated 10,000 mosquito nets to Malaria No More. Then, Hugh Jackman stepped up and pledged to donate $100,000 to some lucky ’Tweeter’s favorite organization!
Unable to choose just one benefactor, Jackman revealed today via his Twitter feed the two wonderful nonprofits between which he decided to split the money: Operation of Hope and Causecast organization charity: water.
Operation of Hope, founded in 1989, is an organization that performs facial surgeries on poor children around the world. In 2006 alone, Organization of Hope performed a record-breaking 134 facial surgeries for needy children on multiple continents. They have been featured in the pages of People and O Magazines.
charity: water was founded in 2006 by Scott Harrison, a former nightclub and fashion event promoter who, unhappy with his life, decided to volunteer abroad with Mercy Ships in West Africa. His life was forever changed and charity: water was founded with the mission of bringing safe, clean drinking water to the astounding 1.1 billion people throughout the world who don’t have access to it. According to the charity: water website, just one $20 donation can provide clean, safe drinking water to someone in a developing nation for 20 years.
Hopefully, this generous celebrity trend is one that, like Twitter, will keep on growing. At a time when social media sites are used to update one another on what kind of lattĂ© we just ordered, it’s extremely refreshing to see people like Jackman and Kutcher not only using their wealth toward something proactive, but also using social media to educate the general public on causes they otherwise never would have heard of.
To get involved, you can donate to Operation of Hope or charity: water today. Or, you can always throw up a “Tweet” and tell your friends.
