A different kind of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” has launched its own holiday today. As the economic demands on low-income families increase, more people are forced to prioritize food and other necessities over home repairs and alterations. That’s why, on April 25, Causecast organization Rebuilding Together brought together thousands of Americans across the country to renovate 4,000 homes with energy efficient upgrades for National Rebuilding Day.

Since 1977, Rebuilding Together’s primary goal has been to help elderly, disabled, and lower-income homeowners keep their housing intact, and to revitalize neighborhoods in need. The organization has raised more than $400,000 and refurbished over 100 homes since its inception.

According to the national nonprofit, there are 24 million low-income homeowners in the country. By 2010, that figure is expected to grow to 28.5 million. For this reason, Rebuilding Together organizes a number of initiatives in addition to their new holiday. These programs include Safe At Home, Disaster and Relief Recovery and Veterans Housing.

With more than 200 affiliates across the U.S. in small town and metropolitan cities, Rebuilding Together makes joining their local crews highly accessible. To become an active participant of this socially responsible group, visit the Rebuilding Together site. There you can learn how to donate money to the cause, start up a Rebuilding affiliate, and contact your state representative to express how essential renovating homes in low-income communities is in keeping residents healthy.
