Causecast leader and pro-Democracy leader of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been arrested and moved to Yangon’s Insein Prison, and may face charges of attempting to breach the terms of her house arrest.

Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for the better part of the last two decades, after winning a Democratic election in Burma in 1990, after which the military junta prevented her from taking power.

This latest incident may have arisen after an American man, 53-year-old John Yettaw, swam across the lake bordering her house to meet her.

Suu Kyi’s current house arrest was set to expire on May 27, and this move by the military junta of Myanmar may be an attempt to avoid releasing the Democratically-elected leader of the country.

Yettaw has also been detained and Suu Kyi’s lawyer, Kyi Win, blames him for this latest incident. An American Embassy spokesman in Myanmar says they are attempting to find Yettaw an English-speaking lawyer.

Though details are still emerging about this incident, you can support Aung San Suu Kyi by getting involved in the U.S. Campaign for Burma and pledging to take part in their June 19 “Arrest Yourself” event. You can also give your support through The Burma Campaign UK and call upon the United Nations to send envoys to free Suu Kyi.
