First Lady Michelle Obama is a big giver. These days, she’s giving all over the place! Whether it’s commencement speeches, fodder for the paparazzi or a guitar to Carla Bruni, Mrs. Obama is actively spreading the wealth. One of the most powerful things she’s been giving in the past few weeks is advice to young people.

In her recent speech to graduates of UC Merced, Obama urged the recent crop of job-seeking millennials to give back. Graduating students, she said, are blessed, and they have a duty to help others who struggle.

Last week, she brought her message to an even more impressionable group of youngsters: third-graders. Obama, in conjunction with Causecast organization Communities In Schools, visited Ferebee-Hope Elementary School in Washington, D.C., and discussed with the children how to cope with bad days.

"When something gets hard, because it will be—there will be plenty of things that will be hard for you all, there are things that are hard for me—will you promise me that you will not quit?"

Despite right-wing accusations that the Obama Administration wants to turn America into an entitlement, welfare-driven community, Mrs. Obama seems intent on the youth of America having a strong work ethic. Instead of telling the group of mostly minority children that the government will provide for them, she tells them to never give up, despite inevitable struggles.

Obama’s spirit of giving is well-placed with Communities In Schools, an organization that seeks to decrease dropout percentages and see more students through to high school graduation and college. The nation’s largest dropout prevention organization, Communities In Schools affects the lives of over 1.2 million children every year. Help broaden their reach by donating or subscribing to their Action E-list.
