On what’s been the most beautiful night during my stay in San Francisco (5/15), I not only had the chance to experience Golden Gate Park’s spectacular Conservatory of Flowers, I interviewed actress and social/environmental activist Daryl Hannah for a second time at the 6th Annual Friends of the Earth Green Ball. During the celebration, Hannah was honored with this year’s Green Hero Award for her dedication to promoting sustainable living and green education.

I first met Hannah four years ago at the Los Angeles Mission Thanksgiving Meal event on Skid Row, where celebrities, city officials and other volunteers served more than 3,000 men, women and children traditional Thanksgiving dinners. I remember Hannah telling me that the most invaluable action someone can do to support a cause, whatever his/her social status may be, is show up. The Green Hero, who currently resides in the Rocky Mountains, knows this from first-hand experience.

In 2006, Hannah campaigned to save a 14-acre fruit and vegetable garden in South Central Los Angeles by camping out in one of the garden’s walnut trees for three weeks. She and 14 other protesters were arrested for the act, which of course brought the star major publicity. But the attention Hannah intentionally draws has nothing to do with her acting career, and everything to do with her plight to save the environment.

After she received her award, we found a corner in the greenhouse to talk about her everyday initiatives, what people can do to make their homes safe, and the importance of "showing up."
