We’re all familiar with that early scene in the courtroom thriller where the hardened, cynical lawyer meets his client, the client proclaims his innocence, and the lawyer responds that he doesn’t care, that that’s not his role in the trial.

Not to reduce the horrendous denial of human rights in Burma and the dubious trial of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to a Hollywood cliché, but I do it to prove a point. Nyan Win, Suu Kyi’s lawyer, says that him and his team have never had a chance to have a significant conversation with Suu Kyi.

“We have never had the chance to hold sufficient discussions with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. We need private discussions with our client before defending her at the court on Tuesday.”

This is not just a distinction between the Myanmar and American legal systems, but an example of just how biased this trial is. The guys in Paths of Glory got a fairer shake.

It was also revealed this morning that Suu Kyi will testify in her own defense this coming week. A small group of journalists will also be allowed in the courtroom on Tuesday, though no cameras will be permitted.

Also according to Win, the defense has been granted the opportunity to present more witnesses in addition to Suu Kyi, including a fellow member of the National League for Democracy party, Win Tin, who was released from prison last year. Suu Kyi’s lawyer claims that she asked intrusive swimmer John Yettaw to leave immediately, but the American believed he would be caught. This incident is thought to be what propelled the government of Myanmar to charge Suu Kyi and her maids.

There are things you can do right now to help free Aung San Suu Kyi.

Give to Human Rights Action Center and continue writing to your representatives and those at the UN. The more pressure the free people of the world put on their leaders and the faster the international community rallies around Suu Kyi and her cause, the sooner this trial will be revealed for what it is.
