Dick Cheney on Gay Marriage: "Freedom Means Freedom For Everyone"

by JONATHAN HARRIS, Managing Editor
Former vice-president, Batman villain look-alike and curmudgeon-in-chief Dick Cheney has once again proffered his support for gay marriage.
In a recent speaking engagement at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards, Cheney voiced his support for states that are allowing same-sex couples to marry.
“I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don’t support. I do believe that the historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis. … But I don’t have any problem with that. People ought to get a shot at that.”
This is not exactly a bold new move for Cheney, and he still stands by his assertion that marriage should not be regulated at the federal level. His statement does come at a time, however, when many states are embroiled in the gay marriage debate: Iowa recently green-lit same-sex unions only weeks before the California Supreme Court shot down an appeal to overturn Proposition 8, which outlawed gay marriage in the state.
Does this mean we will soon see Cheney at one of the many Gay Pride Events this June for LGBT Pride Month? Perhaps not, but it’s nice to know that even Darth Vader is not completely lost to the Dark Side.
