Controlling the water flow through your bathroom is a cheap and easy way to preserve the clean water supply. You’ll save some money too, as a significant percentage of your monthly water bill is going down the shower drain.

Installing a new showerhead:
Find a showerhead. The EPA has a program called WaterSense, which works in a similar way that the USDA does for beef. Local hardware stores will be happy to help too. Anything below a 2.5 Gallon/Minute rate of flow will pass you as eco-conscious

Remove the old one. The removal and installation of shower heads works on a basic turn screw system. You should be able to do this by hand, but use a pipe wrench for the stubborn ones.

Clean the shower pipe. Things run more smoothly when they’re clean, and chances are it’s been a while since you took the shower head off (if ever).

Install the new one. This should be even easier than removal without rust and buildup.

This is the perfect time to learn new habits. The shower head is only the first thing to change in your bathroom. Try limiting your showers to three minutes or less. We all get great thinking done in the shower, but focus on cleaning, rinsing and getting out. It’s a small sacrifice that goes a long way. If even the low flow is too much to you, try taking a navy shower: rinse, turn the water off, lather up, rinse again, and leave.

It’s also a good idea to get in the habit of turning off the sink faucet while you’re brushing your teeth or even shaving. A running faucet uses three to five gallons of water per minute. Do you really need the water running while you’re applying shaving cream?
