How to Volunteer at an Animal Shelter

Find a shelter. There are plenty of resources out there. You can look for animal shelters in the yellow pages, or do a web search for local humane societies, animal shelters, animal control centers, etc. Veterinarian offices are a good place to look if you’re stuck. Ask around your local pet adoptions. The Humane Society also provides resources.

Contact them and see what you can do. Don’t be timid, you’ll have to contact all pounds/shelters individually.

Find a buddy. You can make the biggest difference by bringing animals home. If allergies or other circumstances prevent this, find a shelter you really like and build a relationship with the people and animals there. Making a connection will help you stay involved.

Make donations. Most animal shelter programs are underfunded. Any contribution can help improve quality and longevity of life. If the people you’re close with are feeling less proactive, remind them about the shelters. Animals are cute and persuasive.

Rock the animal vote. Animals can’t ask for help, and they can’t vote either. Find out about and support legislation that allocates resources to animal rescue and safety.

This is an awesome thing to do! I try to volunteer at my local shelter every week! They animals there are so friendly, and they know in their hearts/minds that you're taking time out of your schedule to be with them.
It's an awesome feeling to see a dog smile :)
