How to Buy Local Meat

Check out Causecast’s United We Serve page for more summer Do-It-Yourself service projects!
If you eat meat, try to buy only from local vendors that supply cage-free poultry and grass-fed beef. Organize a trip to a local farm with your friends.
Bypass the supermarket. Buy local.
The food sold at the big supermarket chains is almost never local, it usually travels thousands of miles to get to you. Because of these long journeys, each food item has its own carbon footprint, making a devastating impact on the environment one mango at a time. Also, since it’s been in transit, it’s never as fresh as locally grown food. If you’re a carnivore, keep in mind that livestock from local, small farms are far more likely to be cage-free and grass-fed. By buying locally, you can help ensure that the animals you eat were treated humanely, unlike mass produced factory farm animals.
Pay a visit to your local farmer’s market or the farm itself!
For fresh veggies and fruits, hit up your local farmer’s market on a regular basis. Some farmer’s markets have meat for sale, but often you need to go right to the source for your meat supply. Locate a farm or farmer’s market near you! Always double check that the meat you are purchasing is grass-fed, cage-free or free-range. By going to the farm, you can see for yourself. The best part about buying locally grown food and locally raised meat is being able to get to know the people who farm your food.
If you’re having trouble getting to local farms near you, try joining a vegetable co-op and buying your meat online. This way you can get your local, organic and humane food sent to you!
