How to Volunteer at a Local School

Volunteering at a local school to moderate class assemblies or even help with after-school programs can be a helpful benefit to students and take some pressure off teachers already stretched thin.

Call up your local school district. They’ll tell you what they need the most. Whether it’s providing first aid kits for emergency preparedness, helping out with art projects, or coaching an after-school volleyball league, your contribution will be appreciated.

Be a good listener, for both colleagues and kids. One of the most important parts of volunteering for a school is to give children attention they might not normally receive in large classrooms. Teachers can be under pressure, too, so be open to discussion and hear what your community’s teachers have to say.

Have fun! Working with kids isn’t easy. They’ll know if you don’t really want to be here. Engaging in an after-school program is great, but make sure it’s what you want to do, and your experience will be all the more worthwhile.
