According to the United Nations, over one billion people go hungry every day, a number that’s increased due to the global financial crisis. It’s a disturbing number, and something that won’t be rectified easily, but you can help, and your local community is the perfect place to start.

•There are hungry families all over America, and each state has organizations dedicated to giving aid to the food insecure. For example, by asking for only one dollar a month from all donors, Washington State’s Feed Washington has provided over 340,000 meals to children. Or you can head right over to Feeding America to get involved with a food bank in your area.

•If you want to be directly involved by giving food instead of money, consider putting together a package of food for your local food bank. Make sure the food you’re donating is not perishable. Baby food and formula is especially important.

•Giving leftover food is also environmentally friendly. It keeps perfectly good food out of a landfill or incinerator and, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, prevents water and air pollution by slowing down unnecessary food production.
