How to Throw an Art Show

Though most public service efforts are going toward rebuilding the American economy and helping the most impoverished in our nation, we shouldn’t forget the need for a strong cultural presence as well. Organizing a local art show is a great way to bring recognition to the creative ingenuity going on in your community. Here’s how to get started:

Get a venue. If there’s an art gallery in your community, chances are it’s not selling quite as much as it’s used to. Stop by and see if they’d like to feature a community-based show for local artists. If you live in an area with an eclectic mix of creativity, consider reserving a local park where you can display art, live music and the performing arts all at once! Give city hall a call and see if you can reserve space at a park for a public event.

Get the talent. Ever seen a Facebook or MySpace profile? There’s quite a bit more art out there than you might realize. Head over to the local community colleges and high schools. Talk to their art professors about establishing an organized venue for their work.

Get the word out. Take out an advertisement in the local paper and put flyers up all over town. If you want to get high-tech, you can promote it on Craigslist, Facebook, MySpace, and even start a website for the show. Better yet, send it to us at Causecast and we can help you promote.
