How to Shoot a Local Documentary

Check out Causecast’s United We Serve page for more summer Do-It-Yourself service projects!
There are stories all around us. Digital technology and the Internet allows us nearly unrestricted access to stories that were once hidden from public view. Get out your camera and get to work!
•Find a subject. It could be any number of things: a person struggling with a disability, a family without health insurance, the owner of your local taco truck (L.A. only) or a band supporting a cause. Talk to them and get permission to film them.
•Tell the story. You want to get footage that will visually show the subject’s life. Invest in good video and sound equipment. The last thing you want is to have a great film with no audible dialogue.
•Screen it! Talk to a local theater or even a university. Tell them you have a fascinating documentary about a subject not normally discussed in your community. Advertise it well and you can get a big crowd together and potentially inspire a healthy discussion.
