About 20% of U.S. residents don’t speak English at home, according to Census data. Though many of these people do speak fluently in their daily lives, many Americans still struggle to achieve to their full potential in our English-dominated professional industries. Your knowledge of the English language could be invaluable to a non-native speaker.
•First, learn how to effectively communicate with a non-native speaker. Videojug recommends clear pronunciation and resisting the trap of simply speaking louder. Turning up the volume doesn’t necessarily improve communication.
•Set up specific times to meet with your student. Part of learning a new language is to immerse yourself in it. The more you speak, the better.
•Go with your pupil to work. See the kind of environment they’re in and teach them phrases that may help them on the job.
•Do fun things. Be comfortable with your student. Take them to the movies or out to lunch. They’ll appreciate the down time and will likely be more receptive to information if you’re seen as a friend as well as teacher.
