On June 23, we will be celebrating the 6th annual United Nations Public Service Day. This resolution calls for Member States to create special events that will highlight the contribution of public service to the community and encourage citizens to actively participate.
“The Day recognizes that democracy and successful governance are built on the foundation of a competent civil service,” said Guido Bertucci, Director of the United Nations Division for Public Administration and Development Management of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs. There are many ways you can get involved on this day. You can start by reviewing the UN’s Global Issues page to see what areas would best suit your skills and interest level. You can also visit the UN’s volunteer page to learn more about how you can get involved with specific areas that the U.N. needs help in. To find out about domestic opportunities, join Causecast as we promote the White House’s United We Serve initiative.
President Barrack Obama has asked each of us, old and young, rich and poor, to dedicate ourselves to a summer of service throughout our communities. From the first day of his campaign, this president has made one thing clear: inaction is no longer an option. Government may take the initiative, but “it is incumbent upon the people to take the next step.” You can view President Obama’s call to service video and learn more about the summer of service initiative through Causecast. Be sure to visit All For Good to find more opportunities that you can become involved with. If you’ve got your own service idea, submit it to Serve.gov.
It’s clear that volunteerism is making a comeback. It’s not that it ever went out of style or became unpopular; rather, service is becoming more of an important part in people’s everyday lives. During the last few years it seems that we as individuals have come together more so than ever before to help one another. Perhaps we’re beginning to realize that by doing good for one another, we do good for our communities, our country, our world and ourselves.
Happy Public Service Day! Please share how you participate with us by commenting below.
