National Health Care Day of Service this Saturday, June 27

by KAREN MURPHY, Contributing Writer
So you’re totally stoked about United We Serve, aren’t you? Who wouldn’t be? This is the biggest call to come together and create real change, right now, as communities and as a country since, well, since before most of us were born.
Add that to the health care crisis here in the U.S. and you’ve got a perfect opportunity to create real change right now, right in your own back yard, right where it counts. That’s right, this Saturday, June 27, is National Health Care Day of Service.
Volunteering just a few hours this Saturday will put you right in the front lines of health care reform. You’ll be not only better informed about the present state of health care in your community, but by spending just a few hours you’ll get the chance to make an impact in your own community and improve the lives of your neighbors in the short term while you participate in the fight for long term, systemic health care reform.
I can’t think of a better way to spend my Saturday, frankly, so I’ve signed up! You can find events to in your community to participate in through BarackObama.com.
Some examples around the country:
In New York City:
•Health care screening
•Volunteer at VA hospital
•Health care education
•Volunteer at STD and HIV testing clinic
In Chicago:
•Yoga on the Beach
•Community Health Fair
•Visiting Elders
•Health Care Reform Awareness Raising
In Los Angeles:
•Community Blood Drive
•Collect fresh yard fruit for donation
•South LA Day of Service
•Volunteer at health clinics
As for me, I’ll be assisting a volunteer-run community organization that helps local health care providers during large-scale emergencies.
Make a difference this weekend. Bring your friends, and make some new ones.
