Dalai Lama Marks Another Birthday in Exile From Tibet

by KAREN MURPHY, Contributing Writer
Free Tibet. You’ve seen them, the fading bumper stickers that were everywhere 10 years ago, joined now by “Save Darfur.” Today is the Dalai Lama’s 74th birthday, his 50th since going into exile after a failed Tibetan uprising aginst Chinese rule. And now, says the Dalai Lama, the six million remaining Tibetans live a life of hell on earth, facing extinction of their religion, culture, language and identity from ever-increasing Chinese oppression and martial law.
Earlier today, hundreds of Tibetan exiles chanted prayers and sang songs in New Delhi and Dharmsala, the town in northern India near the Himalayas where the Dalai Lama lives, to celebrate his birthday and wish him continued long life. Although medical problems in the past two years have kept the Dalai Lama from pursuing his busy schedule of international travel to teach Buddhism and highlight the Tibetan struggle for more freedom under Chinese rule, the Nobel Peace Prize winner remains an important symbol of non-violent political activism and human rights not only to Tibetans but to people worldwide, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
The Dalai Lama continues to make webcasts and public appearances, and speaks on important topics that touch all of us like the environment, world peace, harmony among religions, and compassion to become an important world figure for our time. Hear his most recent interview on BBC World Service.
