Aung San Suu Kyi Verdict Delayed

UPDATE: The verdict in the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi has been delayed until August 11.
by JONATHAN HARRIS, Managing Editor
The world waits for the verdict Friday of imprisoned Burmese democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It’s a little like waiting in line to see Transformers 2. You wait with anticipation, but know the outcome is going to be disappointing.
Suu Kyi is largely expected to be found guilty of violating the terms of her house arrest when she offered shelter in her house to American intruder John Yettaw when he swam to her isolated home in May. The trial has been widely criticized and Suu Kyi’s own lawyers mentioned the invalidity of the court in their closing arguments.
The junta has already warned supporters of Suu Kyi against protesting after the verdict is read. So…that doesn’t bode well. If convicted, she could face five years in prison, though the court could decide to simply extend her house arrest, which was scheduled to end several months ago. Even so, Suu Kyi’s lawyers say she’s prepared with novels, biographies and medicine, in preparation for the worst.
The most important thing all of us can do right now is keep promoting this issue and help the groups working to secure Aung San Suu Kyi’s freedom.
