Michael Moore is at it again. Except this time, instead of making headlines with his critically acclaimed films, he has announced that his upcoming documentary may be his last. Capitalism: A Love Story is set to be released on October 2, 2009, and this documentary will take on the financial system. It’s certain to be as controversial as his other pieces as it addresses the causes of the global financial meltdown. Even the release date of the movie holds meaning, as it is one year and one day after the U.S. Senate approved the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street.

When it’s all said and done, there will be no doubt that Michael Moore has a significant impact in the genre of documentary film making. With three films in the top six grossing documentaries of all time, he has helped break documentaries into the mainstream. Fahrenheit 9/11 is still the highest-grossing documentary of all time, with approximately $119 million in the U.S. “It would leave us with a big loss if he stopped making documentary films. His documentaries do make quite a bit of money and he’s paved the way for documentary movies to become mainstream,” says Ruth Daniels of Emagine theaters. Moore’s strength comes from his polarizing persona; his campaigns for the under-represented get him countless followers and those who loathe him watch him just to see who he’ll go after.

So what’s next? Well, Moore is looking to direct feature fiction films. He has already written two screenplays: one a comedy and the other a mystery. Personally, I can’t wait to see them. Moore has this uncanny ability to blend comedy and drama with satire, so he’ll be fine. In the meantime, look out for Capitalism: A Love Story. Moore himself described it as the one documentary that brings all his others together.

He has already done a fictional narrative, "Canadian Bacon," which was really funny (my father hates Moore's docs, but loves the film).
